What is a welfare unit?

A portable or static cabin containing facilities for hygiene, comfort, and rest, including toilets, canteens, and drying areas.

Are they legally required?

Yes. According to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive), adequate welfare facilities must be available from day one of any project.

How are they powered?

Most units will require power on site. This can be from an existing power supply or a temporary generator.

How many people can they accommodate?

Standard cabin units typically cater to 6, 10, 12, or 16 people. Larger modular units can serve 20+ staff. The units can also be stacked to create more space. We have larger welfare structures for bigger space requirements.

Is the water drinkable?

Usually not. Water supplied in most welfare units is non-potable and intended for handwashing only; bottled water or a separate supply is needed for drinking.

What site preparation is needed?

Level, firm ground is required for delivery. Most units need approximately 50–100 feet of straight-line access for delivery by lorry.

How long is the hire period?

Flexible options range from a few weeks to several months or years..

Do I need insurance?

Yes, hirers are typically required to have insurance (e.g., Hired in Plant Insurance) to cover accidental damage.

Do I need planning permission?

Generally, no, if the use is temporary (under 28 days), but long-term projects may require consultation with local authorities
