Hire vs Purchase: Which Option is Right for Your Temporary Structure?

Educational Building Structures.jpg

When a business, school or construction site needs extra space quickly, a temporary structure is almost always the fastest and most cost-effective solution. But once you’ve decided you need one, the next question is almost always the same: should I hire it or buy it outright?

The honest answer is: it depends on your project. Here’s how to think through it.

The case for hiring a temporary structure

Hiring makes sense when flexibility is the priority. If you need a structure for a defined period — a construction project, a school refurbishment, a seasonal storage spike, an event — hiring lets you get what you need, use it, and hand it back with no long-term commitment.

Key benefits of hiring:

  • Lower upfront cost — no large capital outlay, costs go on your operational budget rather than your balance sheet
  • Maintenance included — on a WeBuild hire agreement, we handle all routine maintenance throughout the contract
  • Flexibility — extend, downsize or end the agreement as your needs change
  • No removal headache — we collect and remove the structure at the end of the hire, site returned to its original state
  • Speed — hire stock is often available immediately, meaning faster installation than a bespoke purchase build

Hiring works particularly well for: construction welfare units, temporary classrooms during school building works, event structures, seasonal storage, and any project where the timescale is known in advance.

The case for purchasing a temporary structure

Buying makes sense when you need space long-term and want to own the asset outright. A purchased temporary structure can remain on site indefinitely (with appropriate planning permission), be resold when you no longer need it, and is often more cost-effective over a 3–5+ year period than a hire agreement of equivalent duration.

Key benefits of purchasing:

  • Better long-term value — after a certain point, owning is cheaper than continuing to hire
  • Asset on your books — the structure has resale value if your circumstances change
  • Full control — modify, extend or reconfigure without needing to notify a hire company
  • Bespoke options — purchased structures can be built fully to spec, with custom dimensions, cladding and fittings

Buying works particularly well for: permanent additional warehouse space, long-term storage solutions, workshops and industrial buildings that will be in use for several years, and organisations that want to own rather than rent their additional space.

What about ex-hire structures?

There’s a third option worth considering: purchasing an ex-hire structure. These are quality, well-maintained structures that have come back off hire and are available to buy at a significantly reduced price. Stock changes regularly — view our current ex-hire structures for sale if you want to see what’s available.

How to decide

A rough rule of thumb:

Scenario Recommended option
Need space for under 12 months Hire
Project has a defined end date Hire
Need space for 3+ years Purchase
Budget is limited upfront Hire
Want to own the asset Purchase
Need it fast, standard spec Hire
Want fully bespoke build Purchase
Budget is flexible, long-term use Ex-hire or purchase
