The steel frame vs clearspan temporary structure question is one that comes up regularly when businesses start looking at large industrial or storage buildings. Both can deliver large, column-free floor areas but they work very differently and suit different applications. Here is a plain comparison.

What Is a Clearspan Temporary Structure

A clearspan structure uses a series of aluminium or steel arch frames, typically spaced at 3m or 5m intervals, to create a column-free internal space. The frames carry the roof load directly to the ground anchors with nothing in between interrupting the floor area.

Standard clearspan frames are available in spans from around 6m up to approximately 30m, and extend in length to virtually any dimension by adding further bays. PVC, solid wall or insulated cladding can all be applied. Our clearspan options cover the warehouse and storage, workshop and industrial structures ranges.

Steel Frame vs Clearspan on Span and Size

Standard clearspan aluminium frames top out at around 30m span for most commercial applications. Steel portal frame structures achieve 30 to 60m and beyond with appropriate engineering. For very large industrial requirements — aircraft hangar-type spans, large-scale logistics buildings, major agricultural storage — only a steel frame delivers the combination of span, height and structural performance required.

The Steel Construction Institute provides detailed guidance on portal frame performance specifications if you need to get into the engineering detail.

Structural Load Capacity

Steel frames are significantly stronger. That matters in specific situations. If you need an overhead travelling crane inside the structure, it almost certainly has to be supported by a steel portal frame. Standard aluminium clearspan frames are not designed to carry suspended crane loads.

If you want a mezzanine floor inside the building to double your usable floor area, a steel frame can handle it. Standard aluminium frames generally cannot. For very high racking systems loaded with heavy palletised goods, the structural loads can also point towards a steel specification.

In exposed locations with significant wind uplift or heavy snow loading potential, steel frames also offer meaningfully better resistance than standard aluminium options.

Installation Time and Cost

Clearspan aluminium structures install faster and cost less. A standard PVC clearspan warehouse at 15m x 30m is typically erected in three to five days. An equivalent steel frame takes seven to fourteen days due to heavier components and more complex assembly. Manufacturing and installation costs are also higher for steel.

For applications where the steel frame’s structural advantages are genuinely needed, the additional cost is well justified. For applications where a clearspan frame meets the requirements, paying the premium for steel adds cost without a corresponding benefit.

The Simple Decision

Go with clearspan if your span is under 25 to 30m, you do not need overhead crane or mezzanine capability, speed of installation is important and cost is a primary consideration.

Go with steel frame if your span exceeds 30m, you need crane or mezzanine capability, the application will run for many years, or you are in an exposed location.
